Airbnb expands hotel business amid competition with Booking.com

The short-term rental and accommodation market is seeing significant shifts as major platforms compete for market share. In Argentina, the rivalry between Airbnb and Booking.com has intensified due to an increase in foreign tourists and the rise of remote work. While Booking.com attracts traditional international travelers, Airbnb is noted for longer stays and personalized experiences. Many professional hosts are adopting ‘multihosting’ strategies, listing properties on both platforms to maximize occupancy.

Simultaneously, Airbnb is aggressively expanding its footprint in the hotel sector. CEO Brian Chesky reported during the second quarter 2026 earnings presentation that hotel bookings are growing approximately three times faster than traditional vacation rental bookings. Although hotel stays currently represent only a single-digit percentage of total reservations, the company has added thousands of hotel listings globally, including over a thousand in Spain. Chesky noted that approximately 35% of customers who book a hotel through the platform for the first time eventually return to book a home rental, suggesting a successful cross-pollination of user bases.
