Airbnb launches automatic weather insurance for European travelers
Airbnb has launched ‘Weather Protection’, a new optional parametric insurance policy developed in partnership with Chubb. The coverage provides automatic compensation ranging from 50 to 1,000 euros if rainfall exceeds a predetermined threshold during a guest's stay.
Unlike traditional insurance, this parametric model does not require travelers to prove damages or submit reimbursement claims. Instead, the policy is triggered automatically using independent meteorological data from satellites and radar. If the rainfall threshold is met, the traveler receives a notification and the payout.
The initiative aims to address the growing impact of extreme weather on tourism. Data from the European Travel Commission indicates that 75% of European travelers report that extreme weather conditions have already altered their travel habits. The service is currently available to residents in Italy, Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden.
