Airbnb launches parametric weather insurance in Europe

Airbnb has launched a new “Weather Guarantee” in Europe in collaboration with insurer Chubb. This service utilizes parametric insurance, which triggers automatic payouts based on objective weather data rather than manual claims processes.

If precipitation exceeds a threshold of 1.5 mm per hour between 8:00 and 20:00, travelers can receive daily payouts ranging from 50 to 1,000 euros. The system relies on real-time radar, satellite, and forecasting data to verify conditions, meaning guests do not need to file forms or contact support to receive compensation.

The service is available to residents of Denmark, Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Sweden, and Spain. While the model offers convenience through automation, it functions as a revenue stream for both Airbnb and Chubb, with Airbnb collecting a commission on each premium paid by the traveler.
