Airbnb launches weather insurance for travelers in 10 European countries
Airbnb has introduced a voluntary weather insurance service, titled ‘Airbnb Wetterschutz’ in some regions, designed to provide financial compensation to travelers affected by heavy rain. Developed in partnership with insurer Chubb, the service offers daily payouts ranging from 50 to 1,000 euros depending on the specific contract and region.
To qualify for a payout, at least 1.5 mm of rain must fall per hour between 8:00 and 20:00 local time at the location of the booked accommodation. The rainfall must also meet a minimum duration requirement specified in the individual policy. The service uses automated weather data to trigger payouts, meaning guests do not need to file manual claims.
The insurance is currently available to travelers residing in ten European countries: Sweden, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Germany, France, Denmark, and Austria. While it covers both local and international trips, certain destinations are excluded, and travel to the USA or other non-specified territories is not covered. The option must be purchased at least seven days before check-in for stays lasting less than 30 days.
