Airbnb removes 1,600 illegal social‑housing listings in São Paulo

Airbnb began removing 1,625 listings (773 active and 852 inactive) of Habitação de Interesse Social (HIS) and Habitação de Mercado Popular (HMP) in São Paulo after the city supplied a list of units built with municipal incentives for low‑income families but used for short‑term rentals, which have been prohibited since May 2025.

The platform will notify affected hosts, offer support to displaced guests, and continue the review based on official municipal data. The action follows a city‑led investigation that uncovered fraud costing R$5.1 billion and prompted stricter oversight of social‑housing rentals.
