Airbnb restricts checkout chores for guests in new policy

Airbnb is implementing new policies to limit the cleaning tasks hosts can require of guests before checkout. Effective for all reservations made on or after November 20, 2026, the rules prohibit hosts from demanding time-consuming chores that typically fall to professional cleaners, such as washing and putting away dishes, stripping beds, or taking trash to off-site dumpsters.

While hosts can no longer mandate these heavy tasks, they may still make “reasonable” requests. These include asking guests to place used dishes in the sink, gather used towels in one spot, or sort recycling into indoor bins. The platform is also standardizing house rules into seven categories—covering topics like pets, smoking, and quiet hours—to ensure transparency. All rules must be disclosed in the designated listing section before a booking is confirmed; hosts are prohibited from introducing new requirements via messages or physical signs after a reservation is made.

The policy change follows years of traveler complaints regarding excessive checkout lists, particularly when guests are already paying a cleaning fee. While the move aims to improve the guest experience and predictability, it has met resistance from some hosts who argue it reduces their control over properties and may lead to increased cleaning fees or a departure from the platform.
