Airbnb pledges $500 million to nonprofit Airbnb.org

Airbnb has announced a new philanthropic funding model to donate $500 million to its independent nonprofit, Airbnb.org, over the next five years. The initiative aims to provide one million nights of free temporary housing annually to individuals in crisis, including disaster survivors, families traveling for medical care, and victims of domestic violence or exploitation.

The funding will be generated by donating approximately 10 cents from every booking made on the platform. This model will not increase costs for guests or reduce payouts to hosts. Airbnb.org, which was formally established in 2020, has already provided more than 1.6 million nights of free accommodation to over 250,000 people globally since its inception.

While the pledge marks a significant expansion of the organization’s reach, it has also drawn scrutiny from housing advocates. Critics argue that Airbnb’s core business model contributes to the affordable housing crisis in many cities. CEO Brian Chesky addressed these concerns, stating that the company is not creating a nonprofit to apologize for its core business, but rather to use its natural capabilities to do the “right thing” for those in need.
