Airbnb restricts mandatory checkout chores for guests

Airbnb has announced a significant policy change regarding checkout requirements for guests. Starting November 20, 2026, hosts will be prohibited from mandating tasks that require significant time or physical effort, or those typically performed by professional cleaners. Specifically, hosts can no longer require guests to wash and put away dishes, strip bed linens, start laundry, or transport trash off the property.

While heavy chores are banned, hosts may still make reasonable requests, such as placing dirty dishes in the sink, gathering used towels, or sorting recycling into designated indoor bins. To increase transparency, Airbnb is standardizing house rules into seven categories and requiring all expectations to be clearly stated on the listing page before a booking is made. Hosts will no longer be permitted to introduce new rules via messages or physical notices after a reservation is confirmed.

The policy shift follows widespread traveler complaints regarding high cleaning fees paired with exhaustive departure checklists. While many guests have welcomed the move, some hosts have expressed frustration, citing potential increases in maintenance costs. Some hosts have even organized petitions and discussed boycotting the platform, arguing that the distinction between tidying up and professional cleaning is being blurred.
