Airbnb updates house rules to limit guest cleaning chores

Airbnb has announced a significant update to its house rules, effective November 20, 2026, aimed at reducing burdensome checkout tasks for guests. The new policy prohibits hosts from requiring guests to perform chores that typically fall to professional cleaning staff, such as washing and putting away dishes, stripping beds, starting laundry, or transporting trash off-site.

While hosts can no longer mandate these time-consuming tasks, they may still make reasonable requests, such as asking guests to leave dirty dishes in the sink, gather used towels, or sort recycling into designated bins. The company noted that these changes respond to widespread guest frustration regarding excessive cleaning demands, especially when guests have already paid a cleaning fee.

To increase transparency, Airbnb is standardizing house rules into seven categories—including pet policies, smoking, and quiet hours—which must be clearly disclosed before a booking is completed. Hosts will no longer be permitted to introduce new requirements via messages or physical signs after a reservation is made. Additionally, the platform is restricting hosts from imposing personal fines or banning the use of advertised amenities like air conditioning.
