Airbound raises $37 million to scale autonomous drone logistics
Bengaluru-based aerospace startup Airbound has secured $37 million in Series A funding to scale its autonomous drone delivery operations. Led by Greenoaks with participation from DoorDash, Lachy Groom, Lightspeed, and Humba Ventures, the round brings the company’s total funding to nearly $50 million since its 2023 launch.
Airbound utilizes a unique “tail-sitter” design, allowing drones to take off and land vertically like rockets before transitioning to horizontal flight. This approach aims to optimize the payload-to-aircraft weight ratio, making aerial logistics cost-competitive with traditional ground trucking. The company’s current TRT model carries approximately 2.2 pounds, while next-generation prototypes are expected to carry up to 11 pounds.
The startup has already completed over 13,000 autonomous flights, including a successful partnership with Narayana Health to transport diagnostic samples, reducing delivery times from hours to minutes. Additionally, Airbound has signed an agreement with the government of Andhra Pradesh to develop a drone delivery network across three cities, with a long-term goal of facilitating up to 10,000 daily flights for retail, e-commerce, and healthcare sectors.
