Airbus advances NATO air defense and autonomous refueling capabilities
Airbus Defence and Space has demonstrated significant advancements in integrated air defense and autonomous refueling technologies. During the NATO SPARTAN ARROW 26 exercise in Crete, Airbus successfully linked German and Swedish air defense systems using the SAMOC (Surface to Air Missile Operations Centre) software node. This interconnection allowed for the coordination of Germany’s IRIS-T SLM and Sweden’s Patriot systems, facilitating the first real-world networked firing of these assets. The integration also included the German LeFlaSys system to create a multi-layered defense chain against drones and cruise missiles.
In a separate development regarding unmanned capabilities, Airbus has achieved full certification for the A330 MRTT’s automatic aerial refueling system (A3R) through Spain’s National Institute for Aerospace Technology (INTA). Conducted in cooperation with Singapore, these tests support the broader European goal of developing unmanned air-to-air refueling capabilities. This initiative, supported by the European Defence Agency (EDA) and involving Germany and Spain, aims to bridge existing capacity gaps by developing systems for autonomous refueling of drones.
