Airbus begins Belfast facility expansion for A220 production

Airbus has commenced construction on a 6,221 square meter extension to its wing manufacturing facility in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The project is part of a multi-million-pound investment intended to support a production ramp-up of the A220 aircraft, with a target of 13 aircraft per month by 2028.

The expansion will increase the site’s advanced composite capabilities by adding a third autoclave, specialized wing tooling, and new cranage. Beyond the physical footprint, Airbus is modernizing the site’s infrastructure through new high-voltage electrical substations, a new office block, an expanded 650-space car park, and upgraded IT systems.

Belfast serves as the exclusive global manufacturer for A220 wings, utilizing a patented Resin Transfer Infusion (RTI) process. This technology produces wing structures approximately 10% lighter than traditional aluminum versions, contributing to reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The project is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2028.
