Airbus considers joining GCAP fighter jet program
Airbus is reportedly exploring a potential role in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), an international project aimed at developing a next-generation stealth multi-role fighter jet. Executives from Airbus and the British defense firm BAE Systems are expected to meet to discuss cooperation on the program, which includes the aircraft itself, collaborative combat aircraft, and the ‘Combat Cloud’ digital infrastructure.
The move follows the termination of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project in June 2026, due to long-standing disagreements between Germany, France, and Spain. While the original FCAS manned fighter development was halted, components like digital networking and drones may continue.
GCAP was established in 2022 by the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan, with a target service date around 2035. The potential involvement of Airbus could facilitate German participation in the program, shifting the debate from government-level discussions toward the industrial arrangements necessary for implementation. Such a partnership would expand the economic and industrial base of the project, distributing development costs across more major economies.
