Argentina universities begin national strike over funding and wages
University faculty and staff in Argentina have launched a national strike running from August 18 to August 22. The protest, led by unions such as CONADU Histórica, demands the full implementation of the University Financing Law (Law 27.795) and significant salary increases to combat inflation.
Protesters highlight that it has been 300 days since Congress passed the law, which the administration of President Javier Milei has not fully executed. Unions are seeking a salary recomposition of approximately 28.5% to 31.2%. The conflict has also reached the judiciary; the Supreme Court recently upheld a precautionary measure ordering the state to comply with salary and fellowship requirements.
Beyond wages, the movement demands increased funding for university operations, student scholarships, and university hospitals. Additional strikes have been scheduled for late August, with a formal wage negotiation meeting set by the Ministry of Human Capital for September 1.
