Human Rights Watch: New Bangladesh laws undermine reform pledges
Human Rights Watch has reported that three new laws passed by the Bangladeshi parliament in September 2026 have reversed human rights protections and undermined the reform commitments of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The legislation dismantles safeguards established by the interim government that held power from August 2024 to February 2026. These measures specifically weaken protections against extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances. One law reduces the investigative independence and authority of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
A third law, which purports to abolish the paramilitary Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), effectively only renames the force while providing fewer safeguards than those applied to regular police. Human Rights Watch stated that these efforts to shield security forces from scrutiny offer no guarantee that past abuses will not recur.
