Airbus uses Steam Deck to test ExoMars rover prototypes

Engineers at Airbus are utilizing Valve’s Steam Deck to assist in testing the ExoMars rover prototype in the United Kingdom. The handheld device, which runs on a Linux-based operating system, is being used to provide real-time manual control of the rover during terrestrial testing phases.

Because the communication delay between Earth and Mars makes direct real-time control impossible for the final mission, the rover is being designed to navigate autonomously using onboard 3D cameras. However, during the current development and testing stages in simulated Martian environments, engineers require a portable and responsive way to command the vehicle. The Steam Deck’s integrated controls and open hardware nature allow for the installation of custom software, making it a practical tool for specialized robotic testing.

This application of gaming hardware follows similar instances where the Steam Deck has been used for non-gaming purposes, such as controlling droids at Disney’s Galaxy’s Edge.
