Airbus workers in Spain divided over strike suspension
Airbus workers in Spain have reached a divided decision regarding the indefinite strike that began on August 25. Following a mediation by the Ministry of Industry, a preliminary agreement was proposed to resolve the labor dispute. The proposal includes a commitment to pay real inflation (IPC) and a 7.95% recovery of purchasing power distributed proportionally through 2029, alongside maintaining current teleworking agreements.
In recent votes, workers at the Cádiz, Tablada (Seville), and Illescas (Toledo) plants voted to suspend the strike. However, the strike will continue at the Getafe plant, the company’s largest facility in Spain, and the San Pablo plant in Seville. A global vote across all Spanish plants resulted in a narrow 51.23% in favor of maintaining the strike, compared to 48.7% who voted to pause it.
The dispute remains unresolved as the proposed agreement must now be submitted to a binding referendum for all Airbus employees in Spain later this month. While some unions like CCOO have viewed the proposal positively, others, such as UGT, have expressed strong rejection, claiming the company attempted to manipulate the negotiation process.
