Aircraft delivery delays increase airline fuel costs by $3 billion

Delays in aircraft deliveries are significantly increasing fuel costs and carbon emissions for airlines globally. According to a study by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), supply chain and manufacturing issues are forcing airlines to operate older, less efficient fleets for longer periods. These delays can last up to seven years, with an estimated 1,662 aircraft replacements affected by 2025.

Financially, the impact is substantial, with estimated annual fuel cost increases of approximately $3 billion. Environmentally, the continued use of older aircraft generates roughly 12 million additional tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, representing about 1.2% of the industry's total emissions. This environmental cost is double the potential savings expected from the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2026.

Modernization is critical for decarbonization. New wide-body aircraft can reduce CO2 emissions per available seat-kilometer (ASK) by 20%, while narrow-body and regional jets can see reductions of 24% and 40%, respectively. Furthermore, newer engine technologies significantly lower the emission of nitrogen oxides and non-volatile particulate matter compared to older models.
