Airfryer maintenance and non-stick coating safety

Proper maintenance and safety regarding airfryer non-stick coatings are essential for appliance longevity and consumer health. To clean the device correctly, it should be unplugged and allowed to cool completely to avoid thermal shock. Using warm water with neutral detergent and a soft sponge is recommended to preserve the non-stick layer and prevent damage.

Regarding safety, concerns often arise when the non-stick coating begins to peel. Experts note that if the coating is made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known as Teflon, accidental ingestion of small fragments is generally not toxic. According to toxicologist Henrique Silva Bombana from the University of São Paulo, PTFE is an inert and non-toxic material that typically passes through the gastrointestinal tract without being absorbed by the body. However, while small fragments may not cause immediate poisoning, it is not recommended to continue using a basket that shows significant signs of wear.
