Subaru to phase out internal combustion engines in Europe by 2027
Subaru has announced that it will cease the sale of new internal combustion engine vehicles in Europe by the end of 2027. The Japanese automaker plans to shift its European focus exclusively to all-electric models.
This strategic pivot follows tightening CO2 emission standards and increasing requirements for driver assistance systems within the European Union. While popular models like the Forester, Crosstrek, and Outback will see their combustion versions withdrawn, Subaru intends to replace them with electric alternatives. Current electric offerings include the Uncharted, Solterra, and E-Outback, though high entry prices remain a barrier for some markets.
In related technological developments, Subaru recently showcased a 510-horsepower electric prototype using a modified Outback body. This test vehicle features dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, aiming to test a new, lighter electric platform that could see production implementation as early as 2029.
