Airline rules for using empty adjacent seats during flights
While passengers are only entitled to their booked seat, the German Aviation Association (BDL) notes that using adjacent empty seats is not strictly prohibited. However, the final decision rests with the cabin crew.
Lufthansa specifies that passengers must coordinate the use of neighboring seats with the crew in advance, as seats may be needed for operational reasons, such as reassigning other guests. Safety regulations dictate that passengers cannot lie across seats during taxiing, takeoff, or landing, and must remain upright and belted during turbulence in Economy Class.
Additionally, passengers must ensure their limbs do not obstruct the aisle, and it is recommended to remove shoes if placing feet on a seat without a dedicated footrest.
