Airlines invest in seatback screens and premium cabin upgrades

Major airlines are shifting their service models to prioritize premium passenger amenities, specifically through the return of seatback entertainment screens and enhanced connectivity. American Airlines has announced plans to reinstall seatback screens across its entire narrow-body fleet, including both existing aircraft and new deliveries through 2028. This move is seen as a competitive response to Delta and United, which have already integrated such systems to attract premium travelers.

Beyond entertainment screens, the industry is investing heavily in high-speed, streaming-capable Wi-Fi, often offering it as a complimentary benefit for loyalty program members. For example, Delta provides free Wi-Fi to SkyMiles members, while United is expanding Starlink-equipped widebody service and rolling out free Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members in 2026.

Other luxury cabin innovations include the introduction of private suites and redesigned cabin environments. Air France has launched its La Première suite on select routes, with plans for expansion in 2026. Similarly, SWISS and Lufthansa are scheduled to debut new cabin products on specific international routes in 2026, while Emirates is executing a large-scale retrofit program for its A380 and Boeing 777 fleets.
