Airlines shift elite status qualification toward credit card spending

Airlines are increasingly shifting the methods for earning elite status toward credit card spending and specific spending metrics.

In the Air France-KLM Flying Blue program, travelers earn status through Experience Points (XP). Strategies for achieving Platinum or Gold status include flying, using co-branded credit cards, and contributing to sustainable aviation fuel.

Delta Air Lines has transitioned to a system based on Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs). Holders of specific Delta SkyMiles American Express cards, such as the Platinum or Reserve versions, can receive instant Silver Medallion status, providing perks like priority check-in and free checked baggage.
