Airlink defends low-altitude jet flyover at Cape Town stadium

Airlink, a South African airline, is facing intense debate following a low-altitude formation flyover of two Embraer jets at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium. The maneuver took place on August 29, 2026, during the pre-game festivities for a rugby match between the Springboks and the All Blacks.

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 indicated that the aircraft passed approximately 12 to 14 meters (roughly 41 to 46 feet) above the stadium roof. The display, which included the jets flying through pyrotechnic smoke, was witnessed by an estimated crowd of 56,000 people. While many spectators cheered the spectacle, social media footage sparked global concerns regarding safety risks and the potential for disaster in a packed venue.

Airlink has defended the operation, stating it was a carefully planned and rehearsed maneuver conducted with the guidance and approval of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and Air Traffic Navigation Services. The airline emphasized that the aircraft were not carrying passengers and were operated by highly experienced crews, with each jet staffed by three senior captains. Airlink has provided flight data to aviation authorities for review to confirm that all safety altitude and speed limits were maintained.
