Airport security technology enables higher liquid limits in some regions

The long-standing 100 ml limit on liquids in airline carry-on luggage, implemented in 2006 following security threats in Europe, is facing potential changes due to advancements in scanning technology.

Advanced CT scanners now allow security personnel to view high-resolution 3D images of luggage and analyze the chemical composition of liquids without passengers needing to remove items from their bags. At several UK airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Tyneсast, Birmingham, and Bristol, this technology has enabled the liquid limit to be increased to up to 2 liters per passenger.

However, a full transition across the European Union has faced delays. The European Commission renewed restrictions in 2024 due to concerns regarding the technical reliability of certain scanner models and the high costs associated with implementing the new equipment.
