Airservices Australia CEO meets with Minister after Sydney Airport near-misses

The CEO of Airservices Australia, Rob Sharp, was summoned to meet with Transport Minister Catherine King following a series of operational failures at Sydney Airport. The meeting follows two near-miss incidents on the tarmac within a two-week period.

On Sunday, a Jetstar pilot was forced to perform emergency braking to avoid a collision with a Qatar Airways aircraft. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is currently investigating the incident. Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell noted that while the encounter occurred at low speed, it carried significant potential for danger.

Operational challenges at the agency include persistent staff shortages and a lengthy 18-month training period for new controllers. These issues, compounded by a new airspace design and a mass retirement of staff in 2021, have led to increased flight delays. Dean Long of the Australian Travel Industry Association stated that delays attributed to Airservices have risen significantly compared to pre-pandemic levels.
