Airtel Gabon and ZTE upgrade 4G network to prepare for 5G

Airtel Gabon and ZTE have announced the commercial deployment of a network upgrade in Gabon designed to enhance 4G performance and prepare the infrastructure for a future transition to 5G.

The new solution utilizes a combination of Frequency Division Duplex (FDD), Time Division Duplex (TDD), and Massive MIMO technology. According to data provided by ZTE, the deployment has resulted in a 107% increase in total throughput per site, a 20% increase in capacity, and a 41% improvement in radio resource efficiency.

Razvan Ungureanu, Chief Technology Officer of Airtel Africa, stated that the solution improves spectral efficiency and network capacity to enhance user experience. The upgrade occurs as Gabonese authorities and the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP) continue to evaluate the technical and regulatory requirements for the introduction of 5G services in the country.
