Airtel Nigeria compensates customers for poor network service

Airtel Nigeria has commenced a second round of airtime compensation for customers who experienced poor network service between February and April 2026. This follows a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) requiring telecommunications operators to provide direct redress to subscribers affected by service failures.

Affected customers have begun receiving SMS notifications stating that their accounts have been credited with airtime. Reported credit amounts range from less than ₦50 to as much as ₦1,500, depending on the subscriber’s typical usage and the specific network conditions in their location. The credit can be used for voice calls, SMS, data, and USSD services, and is not subject to an expiration date.

Under the NCC’s regulatory framework, compensation is automatic. Operators are required to monitor network performance against quality-of-service standards and identify affected users through billing data and performance records, meaning subscribers do not need to file individual complaints. This marks a shift in Nigerian telecom regulation, moving toward direct consumer redress rather than relying solely on sanctions against operators.
