AirTrunk announces A$43 billion data center expansion in Japan
AirTrunk, the Australian-founded hyperscale data center operator owned by Blackstone, has announced a massive expansion in Japan to meet the surging demand for artificial intelligence and cloud computing infrastructure. The company plans to invest approximately A$43 billion (roughly $28 billion USD) to more than double its Japanese capacity to over 1 gigawatt.
To support this growth, AirTrunk has secured a $1 billion green loan led by a consortium of 10 banks, including Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and MUFG Bank. These funds will be used to implement liquid cooling technology at its TOK1 campus in Inzai, Chiba Prefecture. This technology is designed to manage the high heat loads generated by AI computing while improving energy and water efficiency.
CEO Robin Khuda noted that Japan is a critical market due to its large IT services sector and its role as a stable geopolitical hub for North Asian customers. The expansion highlights a broader trend where the AI boom is increasingly driven by the need for massive physical infrastructure, including electricity networks, fiber connections, and advanced cooling systems.
