AIS expands 5G maritime coverage to 60 km in Thailand

AIS has enhanced its maritime 5G connectivity by utilizing Sub-1 GHz Massive MIMO technology, becoming the first in Southeast Asia to implement this specific method for sea coverage. During testing on the ferry route from Pak Nam Chumphon to Koh Tao, the company successfully extended its 5G signal range to 60 kilometers, an increase from the previous 38 kilometers.

The technology combines low-frequency bands, specifically 700 MHz and 900 MHz, which are capable of long-distance transmission, with Massive MIMO antenna systems to improve signal distribution and support a high volume of devices. This development aims to support tourists, local businesses, and coastal communities by providing reliable internet, navigation, and communication services across maritime routes and islands.

This initiative follows the company’s Sea Coverage project initiated in 2023 and moves toward a “Sea First Coverage” concept. The expansion is intended to address the logistical challenges of installing base stations in remote maritime areas and to prepare for the upcoming year-end tourist season.
