Aisha Wahab elected as first Afghan-American to U.S. Congress

Aisha Wahab, a former California State Senator, has been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for California's 14th congressional district, becoming the first Afghan-American to serve in Congress.

Following her victory, Wahab sparked debate regarding her stance on Afghanistan. While expressing disappointment over the Taliban's restrictions on women and girls, she advocated for continued U.S. diplomatic engagement with the country, regardless of who holds power. Wahab argued that isolation would not drive change and that diplomacy could serve as a tool to encourage the ruling authorities to respect human and civil rights.

Her comments drew criticism from various Afghan political figures. Some accused her of attempting to normalize the Taliban regime, while others questioned her commitment to human rights. Wahab also criticized anti-Taliban groups, describing certain factions as “deeply unsuccessful and misguided,” alleging they prioritize their own interests over the welfare of the nation.
