Aisha Wahab faces scrutiny over Taliban diplomacy comments

Aisha Wahab, the first Afghan-American elected to the U.S. Congress, is facing scrutiny following her comments regarding diplomatic engagement with the Taliban. After winning a special election to represent California’s 14th Congressional District, Wahab suggested that the United States should pursue diplomacy with the Islamic Emirate government to potentially influence human rights and civil rights improvements in Afghanistan.

Wahab’s stance has drawn condemnation from members of the Afghan diaspora, with some critics labeling her a Taliban apologist. Meanwhile, her departure from the California State Senate has left a vacancy in District 10. Due to state law regarding vacancies in the final year of a term, no special election will be held to fill the seat immediately; it will remain vacant until after the November general election, where candidates Scott Sakakihara and Linda Price will compete for the position.
