Aisha Wahab wins California special election to replace Eric Swalwell
Aisha Wahab, a California state senator, has won a special election to represent the state’s 14th Congressional District. She will serve out the remainder of the term previously held by Eric Swalwell, who resigned in April following allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment, which he has denied.
Wahab, a progressive Democrat, defeated fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez, a Bay Area Rapid Transit director. The race saw significant spending from outside groups, including millions of dollars from super PACs aligned with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in support of Hernandez. Wahab, who will become the first Afghan American to serve in Congress, campaigned on issues such as housing affordability, banning junk fees, and protecting abortion rights.
The special election concludes as federal investigations into Swalwell continue; reports indicate federal agents have seized electronic devices from him and searched his Washington, D.C. residence. Wahab and Hernandez are scheduled to face each other again in the November general election to determine who will serve the full two-year term beginning in January 2027.
