Generative AI adoption rises in Japan amid challenges in information updates

Recent data and industry developments indicate that generative AI is transitioning from a novel technology to a routine business tool in Japan. A survey by AIsmiley conducted at the AI Expo Nagoya 2026 revealed that 72.2% of respondents use AI almost daily for work or personal life. However, users face significant hurdles, with 39% struggling to keep up with rapid information changes and 33.2% unsure of correct prompting techniques.

Further research by Video Research’s Hito Institute shows a sharp increase in usage, with the utilization rate among men and women aged 12–69 rising from 38% in 2025 to 60% in 2026. The survey highlights that students are early adopters, with over 60% of university students using the technology. Usage has expanded from simple information retrieval to more complex tasks like brainstorming and daily consultation.

On the corporate side, companies are developing proprietary solutions to address security and practical application concerns. WeatherNews has implemented its own AI agent, ‘WNI Intelligence Core,’ which is used by over 80% of its employees. This internal system mitigates data leakage risks while automating tasks such as weather report generation and data analysis. Additionally, immedio is hosting the ‘AI Growth Camp 2026’ to discuss organizational redesign and the division of labor between humans and AI, featuring insights from companies like Fujitsu.
