Ajaokuta Steel faces power cut over N5.46bn electricity debt
Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited and its host community are facing potential disconnection from the electricity supply due to unpaid obligations totaling N5.46 billion, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
In its 2025 Annual Report, NERC disclosed that the company failed to settle a N4.96 billion energy invoice from the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) and a N500 million service charge from the electricity market operator. The regulator has escalated the matter to relevant Federal Government ministries to seek a lasting solution.
The threat of disconnection comes as the Federal Government attempts to revive the steel complex, which has remained largely inactive for decades.
