IPL Impact Player rule sparks debate over all-rounder development
Cricket figures are divided over the Indian Premier League (IPL) ‘Impact Player’ rule, which allows teams to substitute specialists during a match. Former Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has called for the rule to be scrapped, arguing that it hinders the development of all-rounders in Indian cricket. Rahane noted that franchises often use the rule to bring in extra specialist batters or bowlers rather than relying on players who can contribute in both departments, a trend he believes could impact the national team's depth in all-rounders.
In contrast, Royal Challengers Bengaluru mentor Dinesh Karthik has advocated for maintaining the rule through the current cycle ending in 2027. While Karthik acknowledged that the rule has decreased the necessity for teams to develop all-rounders and has led to less competitive, high-scoring games, he warned that removing it prematurely would create an uneven playing field. He argued that teams have already built their squads and tactical planning around the ability to utilize 12 players rather than the traditional 11.
