Ajinkya Rahane retires from international cricket

Ajinkya Rahane, 38, announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket, ending a career that began in 2011. He played 85 Tests, scoring 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46 with 12 centuries and 26 fifties, and also contributed 2,962 runs in 90 ODIs and appeared in 20 T20 internationals. His final appearance came against the West Indies in July 2023, and his most memorable innings were recorded abroad at Wellington, Lord’s and Melbourne.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer praised Rahane, saying he could have finished with more than 20 Test centuries and amassed 6,500‑7,000 Test runs. Jaffer highlighted Rahane’s dedication, comparing him to Rahul Dravid, and recalled standout knocks such as his centuries at Lord’s, Melbourne and twin hundreds against South Africa in Delhi. Rahane also captained India in six Tests, winning four.

The retirement marks the end of a distinguished decade‑plus tenure for one of India’s most reliable top‑order batsmen.
