Ajit Agarkar reportedly nearing end of BCCI chief selector tenure

Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee, is reportedly nearing the end of his tenure. His current contract is set to expire on October 4, 2026, and despite previous expectations of an extension through the 2027 ODI World Cup, reports suggest a renewal is unlikely.

Speculation regarding his departure has intensified following a recent selection meeting for the upcoming white-ball series against West Indies, which may have been his final session in the role. Some reports indicate Agarkar may send a 'thank you note' to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia as a farewell gesture.

The BCCI is reportedly considering several candidates to succeed him. Former wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel and current panel member Pragyan Ojha have emerged as top contenders. Other names mentioned in discussions include VVS Laxman.

Agarkar’s leadership has been marked by significant success in ICC limited-overs tournaments, including T20 World Cup victories in 2024 and 2026, and the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, recent discussions regarding the future of senior players like Rohit Sharma may have influenced the decision regarding his contract extension.
