Ajou University Hospital pediatric specialists express intent to resign

Seven out of nine pediatric emergency specialists at Ajou University Hospital have expressed their intent to resign following a police search and seizure at the hospital’s pediatric emergency medical center. The investigation is linked to the death of an infant in July.

The search, conducted by the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency on August 30, has sparked intense conflict between medical professionals and law enforcement. Medical groups, including the Korean Medical Association and the Korean Society of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, have condemned the investigation, claiming it disrupted clinical activities and caused extreme psychological distress. Some specialists reported being unable to continue treating patients within the police jurisdiction due to severe anxiety.

During a National Assembly audit, police officials maintained that the search was conducted legally, in consultation with the hospital, and limited to vacant rooms to minimize interference. However, lawmakers and medical experts criticized the method, suggesting it treated medical staff as potential criminals. The Ministry of Health and Welfare has stated it will consult with the police to address the situation and develop guidelines for investigations in medical settings.
