AJUP chief Humayun Kabir alleges police harassment ahead of Rejinagar bypoll
Humayun Kabir, founder of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) and Nowda MLA, has filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) alleging selective targeting and harassment by the West Bengal Police. Kabir claims that law enforcement is being weaponized to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the upcoming Rejinagar assembly bypoll in the Murshidabad district.
Kabir reported the arrests of party members, including Beldanga-1 block president Munaim Sheikh and state committee secretary Sukhbar Mollah, alleging they were falsely implicated in cases involving firearms and fake currency. In response to the situation, Kabir has suspended physical campaigning for his son, Golam Nabi Azad, who is the AJUP candidate for the Rejinagar seat, advising him to focus solely on social media.
Simultaneously, Kabir was summoned to the Baharampur Police Station regarding an unverified audio clip allegedly containing provocative remarks about violence. Police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Kabir has called for the immediate transfer of the Baharampur Police District superintendent and local station officers, maintaining that the legal actions are an attempt to intimidate voters and suppress his political party.
