Turkey Parliament debates fund liquidation law to address investor crisis

The Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) has begun debating a nine-article legislative proposal aimed at resolving the crisis involving investment funds ordered for liquidation. The bill seeks to provide interim payments to affected investors: those with net investments under 1 million TL will receive their full amount, while those with 1 million TL or more will be capped at a 1 million TL interim payment.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that the government is implementing a three-stage plan to address the issue, which affects more than 455,000 investors. The process includes accelerating repayments through the new law, investigating those responsible for market manipulation and unfair gains, and implementing long-term institutional measures to prevent recurrence. The State Supervisory Council is expected to prepare a comprehensive report on the matter.

Opposition members, including representatives from the CHP, have criticized the proposal, labeling it an attempt to pacify victims without addressing the root causes or the accountability of regulatory bodies. They highlighted that 440 individuals withdrew a total of 401 billion TL from funds between August 28 and September 16, raising questions about potential political or bureaucratic connections to the fund crisis.
