AK Party debates election dates to support Erdoğan candidacy

Discussions are intensifying within the AK Party regarding the timing of future elections, specifically aimed at facilitating the re-election of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Two primary timelines are being debated: moving the scheduled 2028 elections forward by a few months, or holding the elections in November 2027.

AK Party Deputy Chairman Ahmet Büyükgümüş has characterized the possibility of moving the elections forward as a ‘technical regulation.’ Some party members argue that a November 2027 date would be more advantageous than a spring 2028 date, suggesting that autumn is a more suitable season for voting than spring.

Political analysts suggest that the 2027 budget law, to be discussed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, will serve as a key indicator of the chosen date. Proponents of a 2027 election point to potential economic signals, such as significant wage increases for retirees, low-income earners, and public employees, as well as credit easing for the real sector, as indicators that an election is imminent.
