AK Party official discusses election renewal and Erdoğan's candidacy
AK Party Deputy Chairman and Election Affairs Head Ali İhsan Yavuz has addressed the timeline for upcoming elections in Turkey. While elections are legally scheduled for May 2028, Yavuz stated that the party desires the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) to pass a decision to renew elections.
According to Yavuz, if the TBMM achieves a three-fifths majority (360 deputies) to renew elections, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan would be eligible to run for another term. He noted that this renewal decision does not need to occur long before the scheduled date to be legally effective.
In a separate development regarding domestic policy, AK Party Group Deputy Chairman Abdülhamit Gül announced that a Monitoring Board will be established following the opening of the TBMM on October 1st. This board is intended to oversee the 'Terror-free Turkey' process on behalf of the nation and the parliament, with the capacity to recommend new legislative measures if necessary.
