Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear plant passes safety audit
A two‑week safety review by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) was completed at Russia’s floating nuclear power plant Akademik Lomonosov in the Arctic port of Pevek. Thirteen international inspectors examined the plant’s organization, administration, maintenance, engineering support, radiation protection, operational experience and emergency preparedness. The final report noted fewer technical areas needing improvement than the 2022 evaluation, placing the plant on par with Russia’s top nuclear stations such as Balakovo and Kalinin.
The vessel, the world’s only operating floating nuclear plant, houses two KLT‑40S reactors each rated at 35 MWe, delivering a combined 70 MW of electricity and additional thermal energy for district heating. It supplies power and heat to the remote community of Pevek and supports regional mining operations. Rosatom and plant director Viktor Yelagin highlighted the results as evidence of high safety and operational standards consistent with both Russian and global best practices.
