Akaki Japaridze addresses assault on Timo Cavelius in Judo Bundesliga
Georgian judoka Akaki Japaridze has addressed the physical assault on German Olympic athlete Timo Cavelius during a Bundesliga match. Japaridze, representing JC Leipzig, attacked Cavelius, who competes for TSV Abensberg, leaving him hospitalized with a broken jaw.
In a statement posted to Instagram, the 24-year-old Japaridze accepted responsibility, stating, “Every form of physical aggression in sports is unacceptable.” He clarified that the outburst was not caused by the frustration of losing the match, but rather by what he described as “dishonorable behavior” from Cavelius, including verbal insults and gestures.
Video footage shared by Japaridze shows the tension during the 90-kilogram limit matches. While Japaridze initially showed respect following an Ippon loss in the first bout, the second match escalated after Cavelius reportedly made aggressive gestures toward his team and Japaridze, leading to the violent confrontation.
