Akane Yamamoto exhibition to open at Sogo Museum

The Sogo Museum will host the “KIRIKANE Sculpture Akane Yamamoto” exhibition from October 24 to December 6, 2026. The exhibition marks the artist's first solo museum show, focusing on her unique “KIRIKANE glass” technique, which integrates traditional gold leaf application (kirikane) within transparent glass structures.

Yamamoto, who studied under Sayoko Eri, a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property designation for kirikane, has developed a method to make gold leaf appear as if it is floating in space. The exhibition will feature approximately 60 works, ranging from early studies to her latest creations.

A highlight of the show is the premiere of her latest work from the “Tale of Genji” series, titled “Matsukaze — Floating Log Boat.” This piece took four years and 52 kiln firings to complete, utilizing 15 fused glass pieces to represent the emotional state of a character from the classic literature.

In addition to the artworks, the venue will include a reproduction of the artist's studio space to provide insight into her creative process.
