Akasa Air and BPCL operate commercial flight using 1% sustainable aviation fuel

Akasa Air and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) successfully operated a commercial flight using a blend of 1 per cent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and conventional aviation turbine fuel. The flight departed from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and arrived at Goa’s Manohar International Airport on September 8.

This initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two companies in July 2026, aimed at exploring SAF adoption and decarbonization opportunities within the aviation sector. The partnership includes establishing a framework for the supply and offtake of SAF-blended fuel at designated airports across India.

Akasa Air Chief Financial Officer Ankur Goel stated that the flight translates their partnership into tangible action. He noted that scaling SAF in India will necessitate coordinated efforts across the ecosystem, including domestic supply, supportive policies, and commercial viability.
