Akash Deep set for Irani Cup return following injury recovery

Indian fast bowler Akash Deep is set to return to competitive cricket in the Irani Cup, playing for the Rest of India against Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir at the Sher-I-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar. This match marks his first appearance since February, following a recovery period for an L5 stress fracture in his lower back.

Deep underwent a long rehabilitation process at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, which avoided surgical intervention. India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, is reportedly keen to include Deep in the squad for the upcoming two-match Test series in New Zealand, provided his performance in the Irani Cup demonstrates sufficient fitness and form.

Bengal head coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla noted that Deep’s rhythm appeared strong during net sessions. The bowler's previous career highlight includes a 10-wicket match haul against England at Edgbaston.
