Akbaruddin Owaisi challenges Telangana government over contracts and CURE Bill

AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi has raised several concerns in the Telangana Assembly regarding governance and government contracts in Hyderabad.

During debates on the Core Urban Region (Integrated Governance) Bill, 2026, Owaisi argued that the proposed legislation could face legal challenges. He expressed concern that the bill grants sweeping powers to an Apex Council and Executive Committee, which might overshadow the roles of elected representatives. He specifically criticized a provision that limits citizens' ability to claim refunds on excess tax paid to a 30-day window, suggesting this could violate the Right to Property. Additionally, he questioned the division of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into three separate corporations, citing existing employee shortages and unclear staffing plans.

Owaisi also challenged the awarding of a Rs 1,400 crore underground cabling contract in Hyderabad. He alleged that the contract was awarded to a single company that has historically received major government contracts and has provided financial support to the BJP. He questioned why the contract was not distributed among smaller contractors and noted that while the government cites fund shortages for public needs and fee reimbursements, regular payments are being made to this specific company.
