Akebia quinata produces rare fruit in Dalfsen
A rare fruiting event has been observed in Dalfsen, Netherlands, involving the Akebia quinata, also known as the chocolate vine or schijnaugurk. After more than 20 years, a plant in a local garden has produced fruit, a phenomenon considered unusual for the climate in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Successful fruit formation for this species typically requires a long, warm summer and successful cross-pollination. Because the plant is largely self-incompatible, the presence of another Akebia nearby and insect-mediated pollen transfer were likely necessary factors. The resulting fruit, which can grow 8–12 cm long, typically transitions from green to purple as it ripens.
